Blog on slot terminology

Every slot page on this site shows the same core numbers: the RTP, the volatility and the maximum win. They say a lot about how a game is built, but only if you know how to read them. In this blog we explain those terms properly once, so the slot pages themselves can stay short and easy to scan.

Each article combines the explanation with figures from our own selection of 171 slots with a fire, devil or hell theme. Those figures come from provider data and are rechecked periodically; examples and tables are calculated directly from that data, not from estimates.

The articles below can be read on their own. If you are starting from scratch, begin with RTP: volatility and max win fall into place after that.

What is RTP in slots?

RTP is the share of all money wagered that a slot pays back over the very long run. It is a theoretical average calculated by the game provider, not a promise about your next session. You see the figure on almost every slot page, yet what it actually tells you is often overestimated.

Slot volatility

Volatility in slots tells you how unevenly a game pays out. Every slot page on this site lists that level next to the RTP: low, medium, high or something in between. It does not tell you how much a slot pays back in the long run, but it does tell you how that amount is spread out: plenty of small hits in a row, or long quiet stretches with the occasional big spike.

Max win on slots

Max win is the largest win a slot's maths allows in a single game, expressed as a multiple of your stake: the number followed by a multiplication sign on almost every slot page. In our selection of 171 slots the max win is known for nearly nine in ten; across those slots the median is 5,000×, and the highest published value is 360,000×.
