How cascades work

The mechanic and the newest examples

With cascading reels, also called tumbles or avalanches, a winning combination is paid out first and then removed from the screen. The empty positions fill up with symbols dropping in from above. If that new layout forms another win, the process repeats. The result is a chain reaction that only stops when no new combination appears, and the whole sequence counts as one paid spin.

The provider data does not use the same name everywhere. Cascades and Avalanche describe the classic falling-symbol mechanic. With Remove Symbols the game takes certain symbols away without spinning the reels again, after which the free positions are refilled. A well-known version is the Gonzo mechanic: with every consecutive drop a multiplier climbs, so the third or fourth win in the same spin weighs more than the first.

The effect is stronger on grids with many positions. On Megaways the height of each reel changes every spin, and with cluster pays on a large grid whole groups vanish at once. Every group that disappears leaves room for new combinations, so a single stake can produce a run of wins. The opposite can happen too: a spin without a first win ends straight away, because without a winning combination no drop begins.

Inferno slots with cascades

All slots, newest first

According to the provider data, 24 inferno slots with their own page use some form of cascades, plus 41 related slots without their own page.

Most titles on this list pair the falling symbols with a multiplier; in part of them it sits in the free spins, where the multiplier stays in place or keeps climbing between drops. A small group runs on a Megaways grid; alongside those you will find games with cluster pays, with wins on any position and with splitting symbols.

Cascades: max win and volatility

Max win per volatility level

The group clearly leans towards high volatility: high is by far the largest group (16). The other titles are medium-high (5), medium (2) or adjustable (1); low-medium and low do not occur. That fits the mechanic. A cascade does not raise the chance of the first win, but as soon as a climbing multiplier joins in, the value of each drop grows and payouts shift towards rare, long sequences.

So do not compare the ceiling alone. A high max win tells you what a full chain reaction can pay, not how likely it is. Look at volatility and the RTP column next to the max win: within this list the ceilings in particular are far apart, and for slots with an RTP range the version you play may differ from the figure in the table. Some of the high-volatility titles combine the cascades with Megaways or with a multiplier in the free spins.
